Amish Quilt Exhibit at the de Young Museum exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California, November 14, 2009 - June 6, 2010. The exhibition features approximately 48 full-size and crib quilts dating from the 1880s to the 1940s. Quilts made by girls and women of various Amish communities in Pennsylvania and the Midwest are visual distillations of their way of life. The Amish faith embodies the principles of simplicity, humility, discipline, and community, but their quilts are anything but humble. Using a rich color palette and bold patterns, these quilts are truly a unique contribution to American textile history. The quilts highlight the beauty and complexity of the abstract patterns.

E. Charlton Fortune ("Effie" to her friends) was a California Impressionist painter from an established San Franicsco family who granted her exposure to high art, intellectual rigor and travel to Europe. She achieved acclaim with her lyrical landscapes, but after studying with Armin Hansen in the 1920s, she settled in Monterey and joined the Carmel Art Association and Monterey Guild, where she created liturgical (religious) works for the remainder of her career.
This exhibit, The Liturgical Arts of E. Charlton Fortune and the Monterey Gujild 1828-1958, assembles key works from this phase, including previously unseen works like "Serra's First Mass at Monterey," in the form of ceramics, textiles, metalworks, woodcarvings, paintings and photographs from Fortune's personal albums, provided by heirs of August Gay, Mission San Juan Bautista, Monterey Museum of Art and various other galleries.

Though he is most famous for his books set in California, much of John Steinbeck's work was written in or about places far from his home state. Today, his literature is translated throughout the world.
Steinbeck's popularity has never wavered in Europe, and he has a vibrant following in the Pacific Rim. His enduring and universal themes continue to touch people of all backgrounds.

The focus of this year's Festival will be on Steinbeck in a global context and his travel to and interest in other countries, as well as information on how other countries view him.
Festival speakers will include the executive director of the John Steinbeck Society of Japan, who will discuss the Japanese appreciation of Steinbeck; Petr Kopetky from the Czech Republic, who will discuss Steinbeck "Behind the Iron Curtain"; Jack Benson, the Steinbeck biographer; and Susan and Tom Shillinglaw, who will present on John Steinbeck in the Soviet Union during the years of 1937, 1943 and 1963.
The annual four-day festival includes talks, tours, films and the visual and performing arts. A highlight of this year's event will be two theatrical performances of Steinbeck's book of short stories, "The Pastures of Heaven", which are set in Corral de Tierra.
The book was recently adapted for the stage by Octovio Solis, who is one of our country's most poetic, wittiest and utterly original playwrights. The production will be directed by the award-winning director Jonathan Moscone and performed by members of the California Shakespeare Theatre Company, based in East Bay.

First Saturday Living History at San Juan Bautista State Historic Park
The first Saturday of the month until December, docents from the San Juan Bautista State Historic Park not only talk the talk when it comes to early California history, they dress the part and act the roles of mid-1800s mountain men, Civil War soldiers, Victorians and others. The park is transformed into an early Californ-i-a town, with antique tools, machinery and old-timey business like a (family-friendly) saloon.
Step back to the early days of San Juan. Meet mountain men, Civil War soldiers, Victorian ladies, and stage driver "Charlie" Parkhurst, who has a secret. Enjoy craft and cooking demonstrations. Enjoy an old-fashioned soda in the historic Plaza Hotel Saloon. See historic horse-drawn vehicles inside the Plaza Stables.

Monterey History & Art Association holds a free weekly tour of the beautiful Casa Serrano History Adobe. Docents are available to provide a short tour of the adobe to locals and visitors.
Casa Serrano is one of Monterey's oldest and most historic homes, constructed of adobe and redwood in 1843. It is furnished with antiques and local artwork, from the Spanish, Mexican and early American periods. Among its treasures is a piano that was shipped ‘around the Horn', a massive mahogany table that can seat 22, and a suite of horsehair settees.
The mission of the Monterey History and Art Association includes sharing the histories and the diverse legacies of people, stories, and places that continue to shape Monterey.
The Monterey History & Art Association has been a guiding force in Monterey's vital historic stewardship. The guarding of Monterey's precious community assets and the preservation and presentation of its historical heritage for future enjoyment has been made possible by citizens who care and give generously of their time and resources.

Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and Monterey Auto Week
A tradition going back over half a century, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is where the world's collector cars meet and compete. Only the 175 best collector cars in the world roll onto the legendary 18th fairway at Pebble Beach, and only a handful of those will receive official recognition for style, technical merit and historical accuracy.
But the Concours is only the final event in a packed week celebrating the classic automobile! All over Monterey County, classic cars take to streets, golf courses, parks and the world-renowned Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, surrounding visitors with automobiles from yesteryear.
Need to experience Monterey Auto Week on a budget?
Why go to the cars when you can have them come to you? During Monterey Historic Auto Week, classic car collectors show off their vehicles at the many rallies that take to Monterey County's roads. These rallies bring the classic cars to some of the most scenic areas of Monterey County, and their check-in points are frequently conveniently located at area parks. While many keep their routes secret until the big day, you can plan ahead around one of the biggest events.
The biggest rally is the official Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance. Around lunchtime on Thursday, August 12, the vehicles involved will check in at Carmel-by-the-Sea's Devendorf Park, a popular and scenic spot for a picnic. Enjoy your lunch, then stroll down Ocean Avenue for some great views of classic automobiles.
Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally
On Friday, August 13th from 1pm to 5:30pm, over 200 classic cars will converge on Pacific Grove's Lighthouse Avenue and adjacent streets. Pacific Grove's old-fashioned Victorians and Main Street feel create a perfect backdrop for this event.
Twilight Bicycle Ride at Mazda Laguna Seca
After more than 1,000 people turned out for a successful run last year inviting bicyclists to test the world-famous 11-turn, 2.24-mile, 300-foot elevation changes of Laguna Seca's racetrack, they had to bring it back. Clever idea, really: Each month the track will be opened to pedal-pushers around twilight (rain cancels, however) for their own version of zoom-zoom, sometimes in conjunction with events like Sea Otter Classic in April, American Le Mans in May, MotoGP in July and Historics in August. Bikes and lights can be rented from Light & Motion on-site, portions of admission go to charity, but the exhilaration is all yours.
Join us for this family event! Information will be available to educate parents on the many local services that support their children's education. Yes, FREE backpacks and school supplies will be available while supplies last. To DONATE funds or backpacks to support this event please call: (831) 758-7916.
Concours d'Elegance
Once each year, on a Sunday in August, 175 of the most prized collector cars in the world roll onto what is often called the best finishing hole in golf - the famed eighteenth fairway at Pebble Beach.
As a part of this event, and in thanks to a partnership with Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County will hold an Opportunity Drawing to win two amazing prizes.
The first prize is incredible! - A 2010 Infiniti G37 Coupe! Key features of the car are:

The Monterey History and Art Association is pleased to announce that it has recently restored the "Santa Rosa," a popular child-friendly 14-foot replica of a pirate ship located outside of the entrance of the Monterey History & Maritime Museum.
A fun ship to visit with the whole family, the makeover is courtesy of local artist Erik Seniska, an Artist/Designer who relocated to the Monterey Bay Area from the East Coast 10 years ago.
The ship has been christened Santa Rosa, in honor of the ship that sailed into the harbor in November 1818, under command of the French corsair (privateer) Hippolyte Bouchard. Although he is known as a revolutionary hero in Argentina for helping to fight off Spanish rule, Bouchard also attacked Monterey under no orders, and without a "letter of marque," which means he was essentially engaging in piracy.
His forces raised the flag of Argentina, sacked and burned the town, and captured the town drunk. Luckily, the town was mostly empty, since there had been warning from a visiting merchant ship. Women, children, and gold had been safely removed from the area. After destroying provisions and slaughtering cattle during a 5-day siege, and finding nothing of worth to take with them (other than food), they sailed away. This is the only time in history that Monterey was attacked by pirates. Each November at the House of the Four Winds adobe in downtown Monterey, there is a 'Pirate Milonga' tango party in his honor.
On Saturday and Sunday, August 14th and 15th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Kidfest will return to the Monterey County Fairgrounds. A popular family event for 16 years that attracts over 20,000 people, Kidfest is a FREE two-day event full of education, entertainment, interaction, fun and prizes! It is an "edutainment" type of event that combines education and entertainment while creating a safe and fun atmosphere for children. This year, Kidfest will feature a variety of NEW fun, safe and exciting activities for kids and their families (ages 4 through adults). There will be expanded and exciting BMX bike demos in the Pattee Arena at the Fairgrounds this year and many other great activities and entertainment.
