E. Charlton Fortune ("Effie" to her friends) was a California Impressionist painter from an established San Franicsco family who granted her exposure to high art, intellectual rigor and travel to Europe. She achieved acclaim with her lyrical landscapes, but after studying with Armin Hansen in the 1920s, she settled in Monterey and joined the Carmel Art Association and Monterey Guild, where she created liturgical (religious) works for the remainder of her career.
This exhibit, The Liturgical Arts of E. Charlton Fortune and the Monterey Gujild 1828-1958, assembles key works from this phase, including previously unseen works like "Serra's First Mass at Monterey," in the form of ceramics, textiles, metalworks, woodcarvings, paintings and photographs from Fortune's personal albums, provided by heirs of August Gay, Mission San Juan Bautista, Monterey Museum of Art and various other galleries.

Come early; a pillow is recommended for the hard bench, and dress warmly. The concession stand is open through intermission serving popcorn, desserts and beverages hot and cold. All profits benefit the Forest Theater Guild and The Michel Willey Youth Scholarship Fund. The Forest Theater is a non smoking facility, absolutely.
After crops are harvested, fruits and vegetables are left in the field to be plowed for the next planting. But less so than before Ag Against Hunger began inviting volunteers to their county-wide gleanings to collect food for the poor. Farmers contact AAH, who, within sometimes days, assembles pickers to meet at The Cooler at 495 Brunken, Salinas, where the produce is refrigerated before being dispersed, and caravan to the particular field. Bring a bag to take produce home as an immediate reward. The May 22 barbecue with AAH folks and farmers kicks off the Monterey County season; the gleanings take place Fridays and Saturdays through November 13, when another barbecue for gleaners that fills bellies and warms hearts. Amish Quilt Exhibit at the de Young Museum exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California, November 14, 2009 - June 6, 2010. The exhibition features approximately 48 full-size and crib quilts dating from the 1880s to the 1940s. Quilts made by girls and women of various Amish communities in Pennsylvania and the Midwest are visual distillations of their way of life. The Amish faith embodies the principles of simplicity, humility, discipline, and community, but their quilts are anything but humble. Using a rich color palette and bold patterns, these quilts are truly a unique contribution to American textile history. The quilts highlight the beauty and complexity of the abstract patterns.
