Enter your wonderful, wacky invention in the "Chippie's Great Inventions" contest Every day (Jul 16-Sep 16)
Are you a famous inventor? Monterey County youth (Preschool - 17 years of age) are urged to enter the Fair this year in the Junior Home Arts Department, Home to Chippie de Munk's Great Inventions Program and participate in the feature division, division 302, under "Chippie's Great Inventions."
These classes are tied to the very creative inventions described in the Chippie de Munk: The Great Inventor book, as well as additional divisions that involve robotics, creatures and models; rocketry and aeronautics, science fair projects, Grandpa Gopher's Marshmallow Shooter, Story Book Place Settings, Chippie de Munk's Flying Machine Contest with a Glider Competition during Fair, and more!
Five of the entry classes include:
Class 1: Dude Beagle's Nut Cracker - Build a Working Nut Cracker Class 2: Grandpa Gopher's Marshmallow Shooter - Build a working Marshmallow Shooter. Kit will be provided to entrant. Competition to be held during the Fair. Class 3: Terry Pin the Turtle's Wind Generator - Build a working wind Wind Generator Class 4: Brother Jack Rabbit's Ready to Launch Rocket - Build a working rocket. Rocket Launch will be held during the Fair. Class 5: Chippie De Munk's Flying Machine Contest - Build a working paper airplane/glider. Kit to be provided to entrant. Glider competition will be held during the Fair.

California Condor Viewing Tour
$50/person (2nd Sunday of every month - must sign up through Salinas office in advance)
This two-hour tour will lead you down the coast, in your own vehicle, to view magnificent and endangered California condors. Our knowledgeable staff will use radio telemetry to track wild birds while taking in the beautiful Big Sur coast.

With or without water in the waterfall (and there actually might be, this time of year!), this is one of the most popular trails in the park, winding its way up through a shady canyon to Mesa Pond. There are a few stairs to climb, followed by some gentle switchbacks. Elevation gain: 500 ft. Distance: 2.5 miles. Bring water, a snack and shoes with good treads. Garland Visitor Center J. and L. Oakview/Mesa Loop: For a different perspective, meet at the Garland Visitor Center for a 3-hour hike up to and around the back side of the Mesa on the Oakview Loop, enjoying grand views of Garzas Canyon. Elevation gain: 700 ft. Distance: 5 miles. Bring water, a snack, and shoes with good treads.

Garland Parking lot & Visitor Center - 700 West Carmel Valley Rd (approx 8.6 miles east of highway 1 or 1 mile west of Laureles Grade)
E. Garzas Trailhead - From Highway 1, go east on Carmel Valley Rd. for 10.2 miles, turn right on Boronda Rd., go .5 miles, turn left on E. Garzas Rd., go .2 miles to trailhead on right hand side.

Monterey State Historic Park is a collection of significant historic houses and buildings interspersed throughout Old Monterey. The inside of the Stevenson House, Larkin House, Cooper-Molera Adobe, and Casa Soberanes can ONLY be viewed with a State Park Guide. Guided Walking Tours begin at the Pacific House Museum in Custom House Plaza - a great way to start your discovery of Monterey.
Step into the past on the "Monterey Walking Path of History" and view the site where Spanish explorers first landed in Monterey in 1602. See one of the nation's last remaining whalebone sidewalks. Walk the same streets that famed author Robert Louis Stevenson walked in 1879. Explore this two-mile path and discover some of California's most historic homes, buildings and beautiful gardens along the way.
