E. Charlton Fortune ("Effie" to her friends) was a California Impressionist painter from an established San Franicsco family who granted her exposure to high art, intellectual rigor and travel to Europe. She achieved acclaim with her lyrical landscapes, but after studying with Armin Hansen in the 1920s, she settled in Monterey and joined the Carmel Art Association and Monterey Guild, where she created liturgical (religious) works for the remainder of her career.
This exhibit, The Liturgical Arts of E. Charlton Fortune and the Monterey Gujild 1828-1958, assembles key works from this phase, including previously unseen works like "Serra's First Mass at Monterey," in the form of ceramics, textiles, metalworks, woodcarvings, paintings and photographs from Fortune's personal albums, provided by heirs of August Gay, Mission San Juan Bautista, Monterey Museum of Art and various other galleries.
Amish Quilt Exhibit at the de Young Museum exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California, November 14, 2009 - June 6, 2010. The exhibition features approximately 48 full-size and crib quilts dating from the 1880s to the 1940s. Quilts made by girls and women of various Amish communities in Pennsylvania and the Midwest are visual distillations of their way of life. The Amish faith embodies the principles of simplicity, humility, discipline, and community, but their quilts are anything but humble. Using a rich color palette and bold patterns, these quilts are truly a unique contribution to American textile history. The quilts highlight the beauty and complexity of the abstract patterns.

Commodore John Drake Sloat will return to Monterey for an excitingly commemorative event. Commodore John Drake Sloat, Commander of the American Naval forces in the Pacific, returns to Monterey to commemorate his initial landing in Monterey Harbor on July 7, 1846, which was 164 years ago. The Commodore's landing in Monterey is one of the most important events in American history and resulted in California and much of the West becoming part of the United States.
Since 1931, Monterey History and Art Association has commemorated this event annually for 79 years, except during World War II. This year's Sloat Landing Ceremony includes music provided by the Monterey Community Band, attendance of the Joint Service Color Guard and a Marine detail to raise the 28-star flag. Dignitaries will include senior leadership from the Defense Language Institute, Naval Postgraduate School, US Coast Guard and Monterey State Historic Parks. The Honorable Charles Della Sala, Mayor of Monterey will be attending. Captain Herschel Loomis, USN (Ret.), dressed in an 1800 period naval uniform as Commodore Sloat will read the original proclamation given at the Harbor of Monterey in 1846.
But how much do we really know of Commodore Sloat? John Drake Sloat was born in 1787 during the American Revolution. When John was 19 years old he received a Midshipman' commission in the Navy and went to sea. Following years at sea, which included being a party to a plan to assist Napoleon in escaping from the British, he rose to the rank of Captain and in 1845, at the age of 63, was assigned as Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Squadron which brought him to the shores of Monterey. With his landing and the reading of the Proclamation and Order, Monterey passed without bloodshed into the hands of the United States. As history reports, later that day, July 7, 1846, over one hundred Marines, many of them with musical instruments, paraded down Calle Principal, then the main street, playing ‘Yankee Doodle Dandy.'
First Saturday Living History at San Juan Bautista State Historic Park
The first Saturday of the month until December, docents from the San Juan Bautista State Historic Park not only talk the talk when it comes to early California history, they dress the part and act the roles of mid-1800s mountain men, Civil War soldiers, Victorians and others. The park is transformed into an early Californ-i-a town, with antique tools, machinery and old-timey business like a (family-friendly) saloon.
Step back to the early days of San Juan. Meet mountain men, Civil War soldiers, Victorian ladies, and stage driver "Charlie" Parkhurst, who has a secret. Enjoy craft and cooking demonstrations. Enjoy an old-fashioned soda in the historic Plaza Hotel Saloon. See historic horse-drawn vehicles inside the Plaza Stables.

Twilight Bicycle Ride at Mazda Laguna Seca
After more than 1,000 people turned out for a successful run last year inviting bicyclists to test the world-famous 11-turn, 2.24-mile, 300-foot elevation changes of Laguna Seca's racetrack, they had to bring it back. Clever idea, really: Each month the track will be opened to pedal-pushers around twilight (rain cancels, however) for their own version of zoom-zoom, sometimes in conjunction with events like Sea Otter Classic in April, American Le Mans in May, MotoGP in July and Historics in August. Bikes and lights can be rented from Light & Motion on-site, portions of admission go to charity, but the exhilaration is all yours.

The Monterey County Fair is teaming up with Electronic Recyclers to Offer Residents a Convenient, Local Drop-Off Location for "e-waste".
The collection will provide residents with an opportunity to safely unload their old computers, television sets, monitors and other out-dated, unusable or unwanted electronic items for proper recycling. The public should enter through Gate 8 on Fairgrounds Road to conveniently drop off their items.
It is illegal to simply throw an old television or computer monitor in the trash in the state of California. Electronic items have toxic elements like lead and mercury in them that are environmentally hazardous when they are dumped into landfills. By law, such products must now be recycled properly and in ways that won't harm the environment.
The electronics collected will then be trucked away and recycled by Fresno-based Electronic Recyclers, the largest recycler of electronic waste in California and the Fair's partner for this event.

The Museum's important collection of early California paintings and works on paper celebrates the Monterey Peninsula's legacy as an influential art colony. Created from the mid-19th century to the 1940s, the notable holdings include the work of Charles Rollo Peters, E. Charlton Fortune, Gottardo Piazzoni, and Francis McComas, among others. Important gifts from the Ritschel Memorial Trust and the Mr. and Mrs. Justin Dart have solidified the Museum's standing as the major repository of the works of William F. Ritschel and Armin Hansen - two of the figures who defined California landscape painting.
