Amish Quilt Exhibit at the de Young Museum exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California, November 14, 2009 - June 6, 2010. The exhibition features approximately 48 full-size and crib quilts dating from the 1880s to the 1940s. Quilts made by girls and women of various Amish communities in Pennsylvania and the Midwest are visual distillations of their way of life. The Amish faith embodies the principles of simplicity, humility, discipline, and community, but their quilts are anything but humble. Using a rich color palette and bold patterns, these quilts are truly a unique contribution to American textile history. The quilts highlight the beauty and complexity of the abstract patterns.

The Museum's important collection of early California paintings and works on paper celebrates the Monterey Peninsula's legacy as an influential art colony. Created from the mid-19th century to the 1940s, the notable holdings include the work of Charles Rollo Peters, E. Charlton Fortune, Gottardo Piazzoni, and Francis McComas, among others. Important gifts from the Ritschel Memorial Trust and the Mr. and Mrs. Justin Dart have solidified the Museum's standing as the major repository of the works of William F. Ritschel and Armin Hansen - two of the figures who defined California landscape painting.

Hot Pink Flamingos:
Stories of Hope in a
Changing Sea
Flamingos will be the centerpiece of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's newest exhibit, "Hot Pink Flamingos: Stories of Hope in a Changing Sea," opening March 29th. The gangly wading birds, along with adorable penguins, an exotic living coral reef community, young green sea turtles, and other creatures will feature in exhibits that tell the tale of how climate change affects Earth's oceans. This exhibit, one of the few of its kind, will educate visitors about the dangers of climate change and reveal the stories of hope that are emerging using interactive maps, video clips, talkback stations and hands-on activities.
More than 900 folks from the Monterey area volunteer their time to the Aquarium. They share their time, their love for the sea and their dedication to the conservation of the natural world.
